Norman Lillybeck was a renowned foundryman, metallurgical engineer and scientist. He graduated from the University of Michigan, with a BS in Mechanical Engineering 1954. He worked for U.S. Steel, Brillion Iron Works, Modern Equipment Company, Sibley Machine, John Deere in both the areas of the foundries and research, until his retirement in 1993.He remained active in foundry education and industry, consulting until 2018 which was 25 years after his retirement.
Mr. Lillybeck excelled at applying metallurgical and scientific principals as he engineered workable solutions to complex problems. He developed the world’s most advanced cupola furnace computer simulation model and significantly advanced AFS Cast Iron Research Committee solidification modeling efforts. He was an inventor, with multiple patents. He received the AFS Award of Scientific Merit (1974) and the John H. Whiting Gold Medal (1993). Norman's active service and support of AFS and the foundry industry spanned 65 years. He loved iron and he loved foundries. He was “the engineer’s engineer”, a consultant and mentor to countless foundry engineers worldwide. He shared his knowledge with others, with enthusiasm, kindness and humility.
